What do practitioners of holistic nutrition believe?


Practitioners of holistic nutrition believe that each person has unique nutritional needs which may or may not be met by their current food choices. An assessment of the person's whole self and their environment provides clues as to what the nutritional needs may be or what factors may be negatively impacting their health. We do not encourage dieting. Instead, we teach how to achieve a healthy lifestyle that is long-lasting and enjoyable.

The body is a whole unit of interrelated systems that continually strives for balance (homeostasis). These systems are dependent upon one another and work optimally when each is functionally efficiently and healthfully. Practitioners of holistic nutrition are trained to help educate what may be causing an imbalance and teach how a person may gently and effectively correct it through proper nutrition, self-care and wellness counseling.

What is the foundation of holistic nutrition?

Hippocrates, the "Father of Modern Medicine" stated 2,500 years ago "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food." With this principle in mind, the field of holistic nutrition is built upon wholesome, nutrient-dense food. Food that is ideally in-season, local, organic and in its whole form or as minimally processed as possible. We do not encourage the eating of highly processed "foods" and instead introduce healthy alternatives that are both nutrient-dense and delicious! We assist in making gradual changes in order for the changes to be long-lasting. In addition to teaching how to identify wholesome foods, we teach how to prepare and incorporate them into one's daily menu, within possible budget and time constraints.

Further foundational elements of holistic nutrition include a well-functing digestive system, proper hydration by pure water, healthy air to breathe, the use of green/non-toxic products, proper movement and healthy relationships and a spiritual life* as necessary aspects of a health-promoting, well-balanced life. When all of these areas are in balance, along with proper food consumption, a person oftentimes is able to understand and experience what it is like to be truly healthy.

Why is obtaining sufficient nutrition from foods difficult?

A common misconception is that a well balanced diet will provide the right amount of nutrients a person needs. Ideally, this would be true! However we must take into account that many factors influence our health and nutrition needs such as pollution, modern farming practices, chronic stress, alcohol, sugar consumption, caffeine, pharmaceutical use, smoking, over consumption of one nutrient (such as excess calcium without sufficient magnesium), intense exercise, lack of sleep, and so on.

Additionally, most people are unaware of what a well balanced diet consists of and oftentimes fall short of the minimum servings of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and essential fatty acids, without coming close to optimal amounts that would properly nourish their bodies.

It is also important to recognize that the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) for nutrients were originally designed to ensure that people receive what was thought to be good amounts of nutrition. They are now part of the more recently formulated Reference Daily Intake (RDI) levels, however research shows us that although these numbers can prevent severe deficiency disorders, they do not properly reflect optimal nutrition. As an advocate of holistic nutrition I choose to educate about Optimal Daily Amounts or ODAs, which were designed by The Institute for Optimum Nutrition and are accessed based on a person's indivuduality.
